Circle of Opportunity

Force connections between random words and your problem to generate unexpected ideas.

💡 What is the Circle of Opportunity?

The ‘Circle of Opportunity’ is a forced-connection technique that uses random stimuli to break mental blocks. By visually surrounding your problem with unrelated words and forcing associations, you can uncover innovative solutions that direct logic would never find.

The Wheel of Fortune

Think of your problem as the center of a wheel, and random words as the spokes. Each spoke leads to a new perspective.

Define Your Problem

Write your challenge in the center of a circle.

Example: “How can we reduce plastic waste in our packaging?”

Pick Random Stimuli

Select 5-8 random words or objects. You can use a dictionary, look around the room, or use a random word generator.

📌 Random Words
  • Feather
  • Mirror
  • Music
  • Magnet

Force Connections

Connect each random word to your problem. Ask: “How does this word spark an idea for my challenge?”

📌 Forced Connection Ideas
  • Feather: Design ultra-lightweight, air-filled packaging that reduces material usage.
  • Mirror: Use reflective packaging that makes a small product look bigger, allowing for smaller boxes.
  • Magnet: Use magnetic closures instead of plastic ties, making the packaging reusable.

Practice

Problem: “Increase gym membership.” Random word: “POPCORN.” How could popcorn (smell, sharing, movie theaters, popping) spark an idea for a gym?
